Public Perception of Operation Safe Corridor as a Strategy for Conflict Resolution in the Boko Haram Conflict: Study of Residents of Maiduguri, Borno State

Abstract

This study examined public perception of Operation Safe Corridor (OSC) as a strategy for conflict resolution in the Boko Haram used by the Nigerian government through the military. Guided by four objectives; to examine public opinion on the acceptability of the programme in resolving the Boko Haram conflict; the effectiveness of the programme and the relevance of the programme in resolving the conflict. The study used survey as method purposive sampling technique to select respondents in Maiduguri, Borno State. The study reveals that residents in Maiduguri have concerns regarding the honesty of the repentance of the insurgents, likelihood of the insurgents to use the initiative to spy on the communities. Respondents also expressed concerns about the effectiveness of the programme. The study concluded that residents in Maiduguri perceive the OSC as conflict resolution strategy but have reservations in its implementation. The study recommended that the implementers of the programme should engage in a comprehensive public enlightenment to educate members of the public about the component and processes of the programme.
