Assessment of Nollywood movies Anti-Patriarchy Culture and Gender Equality among Female Workers in Babcock University, Ogun state, Nigeria

Abstract

The study set out to assess the anti-patriarchy culture of Nollywood movies and gender equality among female workers in Babcock University Ogun state, Nigeria by exploring the prevailing themes used to address gender equality in Adire and the WildFlower, investigating Babcock University's female workers' perception of the portrayal of anti-patriarchy culture in Adire and the Wild Flower and ascertaining the influence of perceived portrayal of gender roles in Adire and the Wildflower on the attitude of Babcock University's female workers. This study employed a mixed method (qualitative content analysis and survey). The data gathered from the analysis of two selected movies (The Wildflower and Adire) and 335 copies of the questionnaire found that prevalent themes such as resistance to traditional gender norms, female empowerment, gender discrimination in the workplace, domestic violence, subversion of patriarchal dynamics and individual agency & liberation were used to address gender equality. The linear combination of the perceived portrayal of gender roles in The Wildflower and Adire improves female workers’ attitude towards gender roles. The result also showed that the perception about the portrayal of anti patriarchy culture was positive for Adire (x̅=3.48) and the Wildflower (x̅=3.33). The research findings underscore the significance of media portrayals in moulding perceptions about gender roles and advancing gender parity.
