Book Review Photojournalism: Telling Stories with Pictures and Words

Abstract

The over one decade old book remains an interesting reference material any day anytime for scholars and practitioners in the area of photojournalism. As multimedia news contents continue to gain popularity among news media outlets, news photograph; the still image, remains a powerful news source that appeals to media audience even in the digital age. James Glen Stovall and Michael Martinez aptly captures in their 59-page book, some fundamentals on telling stories with pictures and words. The book which has 11 sections, highlight some important components on the general areas of photojournalism as well as useful practices that make photojournalism an interesting field in them media world. Section one of the book is titled: The power of the photograph, delves into explaining why photograph important to understanding of the world around us. It began with bringing to the fore the development of photograph in the 1830s as one of the most profound development that that affected how the society views the world, particularly how pictures highlight places, events and other things that people ordinarily found complications in understanding. The authors, in this section further emphasised how still pictures are particularly effective in making a lasting impression on the audience, hence journalists should make photograph a part of every story they cover.
